Pastoral Mentor (Attendance)
Gloucester
- 41 weeks per year (term time, inset and two weeks during school holidays), 37 hours per week. Part time requests will be considered.

We are seeking to recruit a Pastoral Mentor to improve the attendance of identified students. Working with the Attendance Improvement Manager and the Heads of Year, you will be able to implement strategies to achieve and maintain good levels of school attendance for students who are persistently absent. You will be able to assess problems and provide solutions by working closely with students and their families, often in their own home, and improve the links between the school and the home. Excellent communication and time management skills are essential. Mentoring experience is preferable. You will need to be proactive, confident and have a resilient attitude. As the position requires visits to students’ homes, you will also need a full clean driving licence.

Job Title: Pastoral Mentor (Attendance)
Grade: G, point 8-20: £24702 - £30296 Full Time Equivalent; (£22283 - £27330 pro rata)
Hours: Term time + Insetdays + 2 weeks (to be worked across a variety of holidays (.9021FTE)
37 hours per week (preferably 7.30am –3.30pm Monday –Thursday; 7.30am –3.00pm Fridays). Request for part-time may be considered.

Directly Responsible For: Improving the attendance of identified persistently absent students
Job Purpose:
- To implement strategies to achieve and maintain good levels of school attendance for students who are persistently absent. This will include providing transport for students to school as and when required either on an adhoc basis or as part of a phased return plan.
- Improving the links between school and the home for persistently absent students and gaining an understanding of any barriers to attendance. This work will often be done in a student’s home.
- Liaising with relevant school staff regarding referrals needed to overcome any identified barriers to attendance.
- Overseeing the Child Missing Education (CME) procedure, to ensure accurate records are kept and that all CME visits are completed in a timely manner.
- Overseeing school initiatives / programmes including the twice termly PCSO school visit initiative, Bridge Youth Services initiatives and other external provision programmes.
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsibilities
- To work with the Attendance Improvement Manager to identify students classified as persistently absent (PA) and severely persistently absent (SPA).
- Regular communication directly with PA/SPAstudents, to encourage improved, regular attendance.
- Morning visits to collect students from home,when needed to support and improve their attendance.
- To engage with PA/SPA students and parents / carers, often in the context of their own homes, using a variety and range of skills to enable them to understand the importance of education, engaging with the school and a positive attitude to school.
- Gaining an understanding to any barriers to attendance, using the Barriers to Attendance questionnaire.
- To liaise with the Attendance Improvement Manager, Heads of Years and the SEN & Wellbeing Provision Department in matters relating to persistently absent students as to the progresses made and any barriers to attending school regularly e.g. if appropriate requesting interventions are put in place.
- To liaise closely with the Attendance Administrator regarding the accurate recording of PA/SPA student’s absence.
- To help identify and put a support plan in placefor key Year 11students during examination periods to ensure their attendance at examinations. Support may include producing an exam rota to ensure identified students receive text on the day of exams, and are picked up either by school mini-bus or school car.
- To ensure all students who are identified as Children Missing Education (CME) are visited as per guidelines. Report CME information on a weekly basis to DSL, Attendance Improvement Manager and Heads of Year.
- To build relationships with families of identified students with longer-term absence, in order to provide individual support / mentoring.
- To ensure accurate and appropriate recording keeping of work done with PA/SPA groups of students and parents / carers.
- To produce regular reports on progress and achievements to the Attendance Improvement Manager and Heads of Years.
- Liaising closely with our local PCSO and PC, managing their twice termly visits to school.
- Attend and participate in regular meetings with Attendance Improvement Manager and Heads of Years.
- Work with outside agencies to ensure the smooth roll-out of attendance related initiatives / programmes.
- Participate in training and other learning actives and performance development as required.
- Full, clean driving licence is essential as a large proportion of this role will involve being out in the community (school car provided) and also be willing to drive the school mini-bus (training provided).
General
- Ability to manage own workload.
- Previous school-based experience preferable but not essential.
- Mentoring experience preferable but not essential.
- Proactive, confident, resilient attitude is essential, along with excellent time management skills.
- Good organisational skills, with an understanding of Word and Excel.
