Family Trips Volunteer - Family Team

Stroud

Are you passionate about working with children and young people with additional needs?
Would you like to give time to a local, innovative charity? Would you enjoy helping children and young people learn and develop useful skills through play and while doing that have lots of fun?

Why do we need you?

Allsorts is a pioneering local charity that works with families with children who have disabilities or additional needs. Strongly rooted in the local community, we want to involve as many people as we can in building an inclusive Gloucestershire where people with disabilities and additional needs are included and able to contribute.

We’re growing all the time, with new families joining and new activities being developed for
children with additional needs as well as the wider public.

How much time should you offer? When would you be needed? Where will you be
based?

We run family trips once or twice a week during the school holidays, usually on weekdays. Trips vary in length from a couple of hours to all day and take place at a variety of venues around the county including Westonbirt Arboretum, Stroud Bowl, Willow Boat Canal Trust, Saul Marina, Cheltenham Steam Railway and Cattle Country, Berkeley amongst others. We occasionally hire a coach from Stroud to visit further afield eg West Midlands Safari Park or Longleat. The trips are planned at least two or three months in advance. You can choose to volunteer on as many Family Trips that suit you.

What activities will you be involved in?

Family Trips offer families the chance to visit somewhere new within a warm and welcoming  community or to revisit firm favorites that we repeat regularly. The Short Breaks and Family Trips Co-ordinator facilitates the trip whilst volunteers offer support by being friendly and welcoming to parents/carers and children/young people as well as participating in the activity where needed. You might be asked to offer one-to-one support to a family if they have requested individual support to help them take part in a trip. Parents retain responsibility for their children during Family Trips, but volunteers can be an essential extra pair of hands. The Family Trips vary depending on the activity/venue but we are always aiming to help people form friendships and to feel part of a welcoming and inclusive community.

What can you gain from this opportunity?

  1. Ongoing support and supervision
  2. Making a difference to families who have children with disabilities and additional needs
  3. Experience of working with an innovative and growing organisation
  4. Getting involved in your local community
  5. Reimbursement of out-of-pocket expenses as defined in Allsorts’ volunteer policy
