Description 

Inquest Co-ordinator and Major Crime Review Officer, part-time, 18 month fixed-term contract 

Gloucestershire Constabulary are seeking an Inquests Coordinator and Major Crime Review Officer, who will be responsible for managing key aspects of Inquests on behalf of the Chief Constable of the Constabulary. Reporting to the Force Solicitor, the role will have responsibility for managing investigative preparation for Inquests; coordinating witness evidence; and overseeing the implementation of recommendations arising from the Coroner or IOPC.

The successful candidate will also conduct statutory reviews, major crime reviews and other relevant investigative reviews in accordance with agreed objectives, force policy and procedures, statutory guidance and approved professional practice. The Constabulary operates a rigorous vetting policy and applicants and employees must be aware that personal vetting will be applied as part of their recruitment and ongoing employment with the Constabulary.

In order to be successful in the selection process for this role, applicants must be qualified to PIP 2 and be able to demonstrate proven experience in major and complex crime investigations, including experience of writing reports and statements of evidence and assisting colleagues in attending court and inquests. Applicants must also evidence a knowledge of Inquests and in particular the necessity of making timely and appropriate disclosure of relevant material to HM Coroner via external solicitors. Finally, applicants must demonstrate a sound knowledge and understanding of the Criminal Law and in particular, the Codes of Practice under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984.

This role is part-time, the hours are negotiable but there will be a maximum of 30 hours per week available.

Notice for internal candidates: this role is advertised as a fixed-term contract. In the event that you successfully interview for this role, you will accept the role on either a secondment or fixed-term contract basis.

You will only be offered a secondment subject to your current Line Manager’s approval - please note that there is no guarantee that management will agree to the secondment and there is no obligation for them to do so. It is advisable to liaise with management to see if a secondment would be supported before submitting an application.

In the event that you are offered the role as a fixed-term contract, you should be aware that you have no right to return to your previous role and will leave the force when your contract ends. In the event that you have accrued two years’ continuous service when your contract ends, you may be eligible to be added to the redeployment register, however it is not guaranteed that we will be able to offer you a suitable alternative. When accepting the role on a fixed-term basis, you take the personal risk that your employment with the force may end at the end of the contract.
