- Use Strong Action Verbs: Start each bullet point with a strong action verb, such as Achieved or Implemented.
- Proofread: Carefully review your CV for any spelling mistakes, incorrect grammer, or inconsistencies. Consider using a grammar-checking tool.
Essential Sections for Your CV
- Contact Detail: Full name, phone number, email address, and a link to your professional network (e.g., LinkedIn). Avoid sharing personal information like age, date of birth, marital status, or nationality.
- Introduction: Write a brief introduction that highlights your key skills and career goals. Customize your introduction to each specific job application.
- Education History: List your qualifications starting with the most recent. Include the name of the institution, degree or certification earned, dates attended, and any relevant academic achievements.
- Work Experience: List your work experience, starting with the most recent position. For each role, provide the job title, company name, dates of employment, and a concise description of your responsibilities and accomplishments. Use the STAR method to structure your descriptions: Situation, Task, Action, Result.
- Addressing Gaps: If you have gaps in your work history, be prepared to explain them concisely and professionally.
- Skills: List your technical skills (e.g., software proficiency, programming languages) and soft skills (e.g., communication, leadership, problem-solving). Use metrics to demonstrate your abilities, such as "Increased sales by 10%" or "Managed a team of 15."
- Interests and Hobbies: Consider including relevant interests and hobbies that showcase your skills and personality.
- References: Obtain permission from references before listing them on your CV. Include a statement like "References available upon request."
Cover letter
A cover letter is a document you send alongside your CV when applying for a job and is usually about 3 to 5 paragraphs long. It acts as a personal introduction and helps to sell your application. Cover letters are necessary as they give you the chance to explain to an employer why you're the best candidate for the job. You can write it as an email if you’re applying online.
When writing your cover letter keep these essential tips in mind:
- Write a new one for every job you apply for customize each letter to the specific job and company by highlighting skills and experiences relevant to the position.
- Keep your cover letter consistent with your CV by using the same font and size as your CV.
- Make sure everything is correct such as spelling, grammar, company name and recruiter’s details.
- Use the right tone and keep it professional. Try and use keywords that are used in the job description.
- Highlight your most relevant skills and experiences and use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to illustrate achievements.
- End your cover letter by letting them know that they can get more details from your CV, how they can best contact you.
- Yours sincerely or yours faithfully? ‘Yours sincerely’ if you know the name of the person and ‘Yours faithfully’ if you’ve addressed the letter ‘Dear Sir or Madam’.
