Full Time Charity Shop Manager

Cheltenham

An exciting position for a Full Time Charity Shop Manager has unexpectedly arisen at our newly established retail shop in Winchcombe Street in the heart of Cheltenham town centre. This new shop has already become a vital fundraiser to raise monies to support the animals in our care. The contract will be permanent ,subject to a 6 month probation period, over a 37.5 hour week  to run the shop. It will involve weekend working.

The position would ideally suit a retail experienced, very well organised   person with excellent customer service and people management skills. Experience in a target driven environment whilst also knowledge in stock rotation and seasonal themes will be advantageous. The Manager will oversee and manage an Assistant Manager, completing  a regular appraisal and will also be supported by and manage a team of Volunteers who will help out in the shop. As well as being  confident and personable team player the candidate must be hardworking and able to use common sense and use their own initiative and drive to make the shop a success and bring much needed income into the Shelter.

Liaison with the existing Onsite Charity Shop Supervisor will also be required and overall the Charity Shop Manager would report to the General Manager of the Shelter.

As well as a competitive rate of pay of £12.50 per hour the Shelter offers a work place pension, 10 days sick pay p.a. and various other staff benefits which will be discussed at interview. A free parking space will be available at the rear of the new shop.

Experience in the Charity Sector and Retail environment is preferred.

Title:      Charity Shop Manager

Responsible to:    General Manager

Post Objective: To effectively manage and develop the off site Charity Shop in accordance with Cheltenham Animal Shelter (CAS) expectations to maximize shop sales and profits, offer and promote excellent customer service and present a professional image to the public, with a view to expansion of the retail business.

Main Duties:
• To achieve specified sales and profit targets for the shop, reporting performance weekly to the General Manager on the Monday following the week-end.

• To assist with the recruitment of and manage volunteers, including delivering ongoing training, to ensure that the shop is adequately staffed and that a high standard of customer service, support, information and guidance is provided in order to achieve optimum trading performance over a minimum of 48.5 trading hours per week.

• To ensure that donated stock density, rotation, display, space allocation, selection and pricing policies, presentation and use of all promotional materials all meet operational standards.

• To ensure all health and safety policies and procedures are adhered to and accurate records kept where necessary and keep up to date on volunteer management best practice.

• To be responsible for receiving donated stock for the shop from the main On-site Charity Shop at the Shelter on a minimum once a week basis.

• To ensure the maximum profitability of donations by liaising with the On-site Charity Shop Supervisor in relation to recycling textiles, books, jewellery, etc, liaising with auctioneers and other specialist retailers as required, and supporting the Shelter E-bay shop.

• Implementing and managing cash and security controls and procedures ensuring they are adhered to by all staff, including the security and control of any goods leaving the shop for any reason other than sale.

• To comply with and implement, as appropriate, policies or instructions issued by CAS, and within the timescales set.

• To manage the Charity Shop Assistant Manager and carry out a regular 121’s and an annual appraisal.

• To attend training and management meetings as requested, also to carry out any additional tasks as reasonably required within the post holders’ skills and competence.

• To report all absences and record and follow company policies and procedures.

• To carry out any other reasonable duties as requested by the General Manager, Operations Manager or Community Engagement Officer to ensure the smooth running of the Shop.

• To present verbal and/or written reports to the Income Generation Sub Committee as and when required about the Charity Shop’s performance.

• Reports to the General Manager, decision making being defined and restricted.

• Promote and continue to sign up donors to Retail Gift Aid. Comply with Gift Aid regulations.

• To assist the Community Engagement Officer with any admin required.
