Voluntary Chair of Gloucestershire Historic Churches Trust (GHCT)

Remote Working to cover Gloucestershire, South Gloucestershire, and North Bristol

Term: 3 to 5 years, starting June 2025

About GHCT

The Gloucestershire Historic Churches Trust (GHCT) is a financially stable, volunteer-led charity dedicated to supporting and preserving churches within Gloucestershire, South Gloucestershire, and North Bristol. By awarding grants funded through endowment income, donations, and the annual Ride+Stride event, GHCT helps maintain these important heritage sites for the benefit of their communities. We work with all churches of Christian faith across the region and are committed to welcoming diversity as part of our mission.

Role Overview

We are seeking a new Chair to lead our organisation and guide its future development starting in June 2025. The Chair will be the external face of GHCT, representing the charity, promoting its work, and driving strategic growth. You will work with a dedicated team of volunteers, including the Treasurer, Grants Chair, and Secretary, supporting them in operational matters while ensuring compliance with governance and regulatory requirements. While the Chair need not follow any particular faith, or be of any faith, however they must demonstrate a willingness to work sympathetically with all Christian churches in the region.

Responsibilities

- Lead GHCT’s governance, ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory standards.
- Support and collaborate with volunteer office holders on operational and strategic initiatives.
- Represent GHCT externally, building relationships to further the charity’s reach and impact.
- Chair four Council meetings annually (three currently held on Zoom) and bi-monthly Office Holder meetings, with additional communication via email and phone.

Time Commitment

The role requires a minimum commitment of approximately one day per month, with 2–3 hours per week for correspondence. However, there is significant scope to expand the role, depending on your interests and vision for broadening GHCT’s impact and reach across Gloucestershire, South Gloucestershire, and North Bristol.

What We’re Looking For

We welcome applications from individuals of all backgrounds who share a passion for heritage preservation and community support. Experience in charity governance or nonprofit leadership is preferred but not essential. Most importantly, we are looking for a leader who can inspire and collaborate with others, bringing their own vision to GHCT’s work.

How to Apply

If you’re interested in this rewarding leadership opportunity, we encourage you to reach out to discuss your aspirations and ideas for GHCT.
